Built for businesses, not investors

Everything we build at frslabs is for our end consumers. And nothing ever conceived here is to please investors because we have none. We did have a few rounds of investor discussions early on, and we found them utterly prosaic. Since then, we decided that everything we do is for our customers, not investors.

If you are a young engineer wanting to work in a fast-growing start-up, choose carefully. If you are joining a company that is heavily funded, beware that the company is spending other people’s money. And every time they raise more money, they are giving up more and more of their company away to investors. Investors invest in companies to get an aggressive return in as short a time as possible. Therefore, they will push the founders, the founders will push the managers, and the managers will push everyone, including you. End result: burnout.

Take it with a pinch of salt when a heavily funded company says: you are their top priority. No, the investors are their top priority (not even their customers). There is no second-guessing to this despite the veneer of paid press releases, celebrity salaries, ESOPs and employee benefits. You really have to ask yourself this moral question: do you want to join a company to make the rich folks richer, or do you want to join a company to genuinely learn, contribute and be part of a unique long term success story.

Here’s where we are different: We have taken zero investment. We craft clever products. We support our customers totally. The welfare of our staff is our highest priority (interesting work, high spec laptops, organised work, friendly folks, salaries always on time, no layoffs and no surprises). Our decisions are swift. We do not have to run everything past an elite group of investors or go through a legal-techno-mumbo-jumbo sieve to get things done. In short, we are building a company as all companies should be built: a good old fashioned sustainable and profitable business.
