A typical week at frslabs

For most people, Monday is a drag. But not so for us. It is the one time in a week we get together as a team (virtually, of course) to discuss the work ahead.

We have a task board wherein the teams add the tasks for the week ahead. And the weekly calls are really a chance to clarify, prioritise, and remove any roadblocks to get things done as expected. All ideas, however small or big, are recorded separately so it doesn’t dilute the current problems at hand. We maintain a roadmap with all kinds of epics, stories, and outright crazy thoughts to be considered for the future.

Once we are done with the weekly call (usually lasting about an hour for each team), there is little or no interruption for the rest of the week (unless, of course, we are dealing with a production issue). Teams usually interact in their own channels and update the task board regularly on progress. The idea is that everyone in the company can see what everyone is doing without chasing for updates. And for managers to see how everything is coming together without the need for acting like task masters (that people hate).

At the end of the week, we have an automated check-in process asking us about our accomplishments for the week which gets summarised for people to look back and see how each of us are progressing towards personal and company growth. And that’s pretty much it. Except for some client updates or urgent fixes, usually, the weekends are free for us to get life done.

Of course, not all work weeks are the same. Some are busier than others, but those are outliers, like a regular runner doing the odd marathon. On the brighter side, there are also the lively debates and discussions we have on figuring out something we are building for the first time. And then see the magic happen once built, truly is a delight. Try to imagine this against your own work week and see the difference of working for small companies.
